It is another post in my home series. Today I am going to be talking to you about our dining room décor. When we were first looking to buy a house, we were desperate for a dining room. The ren ted house that we lived in previously was pretty small and that forced us to eat from our laps. Very quickly, we grew frustrated and craved a nice dining room. Luckily for us, the house that we fell in love with had a fantastic open plan kitchen that leads into the dining space. However, we knew straight away that we wanted to change the space to make it work for me. I would say that generally we are 90% happy with our dining room décor. However, we are close enough that I now want to share this post with you.
How it was when we moved in.
If you have been here for my previous house posts, you will know that the previous owners loved yellow. The skirting boards and doors were all yellow gloss. However, instead of the walls in the dining room being yellow, in this space they were bright purple. It still blows my mind some of the colour combinations that they had in this space. To be honest, when we first went to view it, I was almost put off from purchasing it because I couldn’t get past their choice of décor and paint colours!
How it was when we decorated the space.
The first thing that I did to the walls was whitewash them. I have found with the entire house; I have needed a blank canvas to allow me to see past the previous décor. From there, I applied a dado rail and panelling to the lower half of the room, which I painted in white. Then on the upper half of the room, I opted to go with a beautiful Sage green. I was pretty nervous to begin with because it was the first area of colour in the house, but I really think that it really brings the space together. It makes it much homier in my opinion.
The furniture that we added.
For furniture, we kept it very simple because it isn’t the largest of areas. The main thing is naturally our solid wood table. We had this table sourced from a local carpenter. I love that the wood has a very natural grin through it and it is not perfect. There are notches out of it, the texture is uneven and bumpy. Just how wood should be. We then went with three industrial looking chairs for one side and a matching wooden bench for the opposite. The only other things in the space are some rustic shelves that are similar in style to the table and our industrial light, which I simply adore.
The décor that we added to fill the space.
Once the space was decorated and with the furniture, it was simply a case of dressing the area. For the décor touches, it was important to me that it stayed in line with the rest of the house. I wanted small and rustic touches, none of which are glam or over the top. We opted for a nice olive tree in a raised pot, cookery books on the shelves, a wonderful centrepiece on the table and a gallery wall with our favourite family pictures in. It is a simple space with very small and homely touches. I love how it brings the space together.
What other changes we are going to make.
The other changes that we are planning to make is to the flooring in the space. Throughout the entire ground floor, we have laminate floor. The floor itself is not that offensive, but it does full very warm in tone. We are getting the floor swapped out for a natural oak herringbone flooring. Hopefully that will be done before Christmas. The reason we have left it so long is because this flooring is super expensive, but it will be worth it. I feel like once that is done, I will be happy with the space and it will just be a case of making small tweaks every now and again.
